Let's Light It Up For Peace!

For a people known for having overthrown an abusive regime through the peaceful demonstration of the people’s power to chart the nation’s course, it is unfortunate that the long-drawn violent conflict between the state and the CPP-NPA-NDF and the MILF continues to this day. For decades, lives have been laid down, families rent apart, and communities disrupted.

This February, we are given the opportunity to finally put an end to these armed conflicts. In February, peace talks will commence anew. I place high hopes in these talks because I know that peace can never be won through the barrel of a gun. A just and lasting peace can only be attained through sincere efforts to talk and address legitimate grievances. Only then can we move forward as a nation.

This shared hope for peace brought together a group of civil society organizations, student organizations, and government agencies to launch a campaign for peace.  We are calling for an end to strife and armed conflict. We are calling on the respective negotiating panels to sincerely work towards reaching a peace agreement. We are neither taking the side of the government nor of the CPP-NPA-NDF or the MILF. We are taking the side of the Philippines; we are taking the side of Peace.

Speaking together, we hope that our voices will be heard, our message loud and clear: I am Filipino. I am for Peace.

We are asking you to add your voice to ours. We are inviting, urging even, all Filipinos. Let us make this call more resounding than gunshots and cannon blasts. Let us speak up and stand up against violent conflict. As peace is indivisible, so too, must efforts towards peace be shared by all.

On February 8, Tuesday, let’s all send out a silent but strong message for peace.
At 6pm, let’s light candles for peace in front of our homes. It would be great if you and your organization could join us in lighting a trail from Santolan, Katipunan, C.P. Garcia leading to the Peace Bell at the Quezon City Memorial Circle. We also strongly encourage similar efforts in areas outside of Metro Manila. We have partners organizing a peace trail in other major cities such as Cebu, Zamboanga, Cavite, Cotabato, and Davao. Let us send off the peace panels with our prayers, support, and well wishes.

Please spread the word. On Tuesday next week, let’s light it up Peace.
